THE LADIES LOVELACE LUNCHEON
a women's empowerment in STEM luncheon I created and implemented at White Plains High School, 2016.
One day, a bright and beautiful young calculus student marched into my classroom, aggravated, and threw her bookbag on the desk and huffed, "Ms. Phillips, if I had a dollar for every time someone was surprised I was good at math, I'd be rich."
I replied, "if I had a dollar for everyone who was surprised I taught calculus, I would be, too."
And from this, the idea for the Ladies' Lovelace Luncheon, alliteratively named after programmer Ada Lovelace (changed from Ladies Love L'Hopital's Luncheon) was born.
It is a women's empowerment luncheon designed for all women enrolled in any level of calculus and was generously funded by the White Plains PTA and the Friends of White Plains Public Schools.
