Making Math Visible

My new idea “making math visible.” Get them out of their classrooms for a bit! Posting and doing their work all around the school for everyone to see… why should all the other disciplines get to have all the fun?

Here they are writing their exam answers with thank you notes on their favorite teachers’ cars (with permission!)

The recipient teachers were super excited to see what was on their car, even if they didn’t understand a word. Or an integral, much less a double integral. One kid picked me, did what he was supposed to do, and then circled my dime sized crack in the windshield and it told me I should get that fixed as soon as possible even though it’s probably going to be expensive 😂 from the mouths of babes 💕

Ideas to “make math visible”

  1. Get them out of the classroom and post their problems on the walls, gallery style. Assign teams and give them sharpies; make sure you use feedstock so the sharpies don’t bleed through!

  2. Buy them glass markers and let them do the work on windows or on their favorite teachers’ car windows (paired with strong expectations on what they should not be writing on their teachers’ car windows)

  3. Get sidewalk chalk and let them do their walk on the school grounds outside.

They love this! And allow for a little silliness and creativity… kids don’t get to be kids as often as they should be.
